Finchale Abbey is an adult only touring park, so if you’re looking for a quiet getaway just the two of you, this is the place to go. All pitches have stunning views across the park and out over the Abbey ruins backed by woodland and the River Wear.
The site is naturally and gently sloping; however, the site layout keeps the pitches level although chocks may be needed on occasion. There are both hard-standing and grass pitches, and almost all of them have an electric hook-up (10-16 amp).
The toilets are excellent and the farm often sells fresh farm produce at the kiosk by the Abbey.
Things to do
There is no other campsite with this historic building towering over it, literally 4m away.
The ruins of Finchale (pronounced Fink-le) have stood in the meander of the River Wear for hundreds of years and the surrounding scenery and picturesque sights and views make the caravan park, which overlooks the Abbey quite unique and stunning in its own right.
You can take a walk along the beautiful River Wear or take a trek into the City Centre of Durham, again along the river. Only 4 miles from the historical city of Durham where you can find everything from a day out shopping in high-end stores to bespoke artisan shops, take in the sites of the city from the Castle to Durham Cathedral or take a boat out on the river.
If you fancy a grown-up getaway in one of our VW campervans, Finchale Abbey is worth a visit.
